What it is

A punch list is the list of work that still needs to be completed or corrected before an area or the whole job is accepted. Each item names where it is, who has to fix it, and who checked that it was fixed.

When it's required

Most contracts tie substantial completion to a punch list that the contractor prepares and the architect or owner reviews. Many teams also punch area by area through the job, so the final list is short.

Field by field

Item number: Number every item and never reuse a number, so it can be referred to.
Location: Building, level, room or grid line, specific enough that someone else can find it.
Description: What is wrong and what done looks like. One defect per item.
Responsible trade: The company that has to fix it.
Priority: What blocks occupancy or another trade comes first.
Due: The date it must be ready for review.
Status: Open, in progress, ready for review, closed. Only the reviewer closes an item.
Verified by and date: Who checked the fix, and when.
